Article voiceover
Father God Lord Jesus Holy Spirit We present ourselves before You again this Sunday. You call us to substance more than style. You command us to confess our sin. We don’t always love that about You. We like to deal in appearances. We like fantasy. We like Instagram, where we Admire people who polish up Their ordinary lives to look extraordinary— Perfect, sparkly, stylish. They don’t look like sinners. But You know, Jesus. You know what they’re leaving out. And you know our inner lives. You know what we resist and What we give in to. We are here because we believe, At least theoretically, that living our ordinary, Broken lives in confession before You Is better than fantasy. You say we are “accepted in the Beloved,” So we are here in hope, that if others Reject us and even if we reject ourselves, You will receive us as we submit to You. We will never give up presenting our whole selves. There’s always more to face up to. And the best is yet to be, when Reality exceeds fantasy and Holiness is the substance of our existence. Amen.
Hi Karen,
You outdid yourself (once again :-) ). You know I wrote an article last week about confession, so I began your article with heightened interest. But I loved the twist you put on confession: how we prefer the imaginary and fantasy, or (better yet) the style over substance.
Your allusion to appearances in social media is perfect.
In my article, I focused on the FACT we moderns dislike confession. In your poem, you explained WHY we hate confession; we hate anything that makes us look bad.
I really like your poem. It reminds me of what Jesus says to the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3:
"Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked" Rev 3:17
