Father God Lord Jesus Holy Spirit We present ourselves before You again this Sunday. As usual, on this cultural holiday honoring mothers, We sit here with a variety of feelings. Some of us need to borrow other mothers. We need to hear stories of good mothers. We need to imagine a different mother than We had so we can grasp what kind of mother You wanted for us. We need to experience You, God, who, though We call You Father, are neither male nor female. You nurture and comfort like a good mother. Some of us need that comfort today Because our dear mothers have died. Others need your conviction and your forgiveness Because we weren’t the mothers to our children That they deserved. Meet us, Lord, with what we need today. Those of us with sweet mothers. Those with emotionally or physically absent mothers. Those who wanted to be mothers. Those whose mothers are acting out the long goodbye. Those whose mothers are already gone. Motherhood is meant to be a manifestation of Your attention and encouragement. And we trust You Will make it up to us if we didn’t get good mothering. And You will forgive us where we have fallen short. We will always need your nurture. There’s always more conviction and comfort for us. And the best is yet to be, when You will gather all your Children to live a joyful family life forever. Amen.
