William McDowell’s lyrics, “I give myself away,” propose an impossibility. We cannot give what we do not possess. How do we own ourselves?
We belong to the One who made us, like any creation is possessed by the one who designed and produced the art.
And yet, there is some truth in it. God, having made us, gives us the right to dispose of ourselves as we wish.
But the choices are constrained. We either give ourselves back to God or we give ourselves to death.
Giving ourselves to death looks like what our culture now glorifies. Self-destruction looks like self-will and self-determination.
Submitting to and obeying God can feel like death, but leads to life.
We belong to Him.
Glory.
Indeed, we belong to Him. Thank you, Father, for not giving up on us and welcoming us back home when we stray.
Amen. Thank you, Karen.
