Absorb the Sin
Tuesday Thought 5.26.26
Scott Sauls, a Tennessee pastor, in yesterday’s Substack post about mercy and justice says: “Mercy is justice absorbed by someone else.” Jesus absorbed our sin on the cross and we are called to absorb the sins of others against us. I’ve used the absorption image to describe forgiveness. But Sauls offers an additional nuance and perspective: Forgiveness offers mercy and takes on the weight of the justice. Jesus models the process and, if we are willing, gives us the power to absorb the suffering without retaliation. To carry the weight of justice ourselves, without requiring punishment. Forgiveness is such a central concept of our holiness and emotional health that we can’t talk about it enough. Lord, convict us and empower us to give mercy while we absorb justice. The Lord bless you and keep you all your days. Scott Sauls Post
